Happiness Prediction Couple from Sound Tone

Researchers from USC Viterbi School of Engineering in California and Utah University, USA, developed an algorithm that can study the tone and intensity of the spouse's voice as they talk to each other. The tool can determine how happy the two are in the relationship.

Reported by the Independent, for research published in the journal Prooceedings of Interspeech, the researchers recorded conversations at 100 marriage counseling sessions, for two years. They then track the marital status of couples over the next five years.
They found that the algorithm could predict serious relationship problems with an accuracy of 79 percent, better than relationships with relationship therapists.

"What you are saying is not the only thing that matters. What matters is how you say it. Our research confirms that it (the way of speaking) also keeps the couple's relationship, "said Shrikanth Narayanan of USC Viterbi who led the study.

Studying the couple over a certain period of time shows how the real partner feels, and that's more accurate than the 'behavioral code' developed by the therapist, the researchers said.

"Researchers and psychology practitioners have long known that talking and discussing problems with couples has important implications for the health of their relationship," said Brian Baucom from the University of Utah.

"However, the lack of an efficient and reliable tool for measuring important elements in the conversation, is a major obstacle in the process of clinical examination."
