Sympathy and Empathy: Two Personal Properties of Journalists

Since humans feel the need in the fulfillment of information needs, since then humans are always doing 'hunting' of existing information. Especially information that has a direct relationship with the consumer's life of such information.

Sometimes the press captures things like the above phenomenon as their way out becomes a powerful medium in the eyes of society. Strong, that this media will always be selected by the public in search of the latest information.

But behind it all, the press also indirectly can 'cheat' the eyes of the wider community with exaggerated news. This is the problem for public information knowledge. It is not impossible that society will be misperception and become blind to the right information.

The responsibility of the press is urgently needed here, when the press is business-oriented, it will make the news an "blind" article of concern and the interests of others. The public will be drugged so as to continue to believe what the media say.

Journalistic activity is trying to continue to produce facts. For any journalist, language is also a tool to describe a reality in society. Describing a state of society with words is able to tell the real what happened to consumers of information on the scene. Selection of certain words, sentences or phrases can produce a certain meaning.

Learning the nature of sympathy and empathy in journalism is not taught in theory, even practice. However, who would have thought that journalism actually has a very touching nature in his work. A journalist should be able to blend in with different levels of society, different knowledge, even different cultures. It is this way that a journalist really tested how he was able to survive among the unknown but able to bring the truth from the news he was about to write.

The weakness of the absence of theory and practice in journalism makes many journalistic practitioners forget things that are human. Very unethical in the eyes of the public if a journalist actually has a way that can be rough in the process of looking for news. Easy example, journalistic practitioners who do not comply with the journalistic code of ethics.

This example was heard from a lecturer, a murder case sometime in 2009 by a perpetrator named Ryan from Jombang, East Java. Ryan initially lived with his simple family until he was made a suspect by the police as a murderer. As a medium, attempts to preach remain, but the exaggerated impression that boredom comes to the news. Simple residence houses are transformed into 'stage' that lure people around to watch until crowed. How feelings to mental burden suffered Ryan family no media that raised it into news.
The definition of sympathy

Sympathy is one's attraction to others to be able to feel the other person's feelings. Example: help others affected by the disaster to emerge emotionally able to feel the person affected by the disaster.

Journalism is recognized as a science that seeks to help many people; Help people obtain information through journalistic outcomes, and also help people to share their feelings when experiencing problems that can not be solved on their own. It turns out that in addition to requiring sympathy, journalism also invites the sympathy of others.

A journalist practitioner preaches a victim of a natural disaster, indirectly greatly assisting the victim to obtain material assistance from the person who sees the news. I do not know what the fate if the victims of natural disasters are not reported in depth through the conscience, but only reported information discourse on an event.

Sympathy is needed by the journalistic practitioner in his work. This is because journalistic work is a job that has to connect with many people, different backgrounds, cultural knowledge, even different levels of emotion. A journalist practitioner who only uses interview techniques and so forth will fail to do his job because such a thing will only feel like a nuisance to the subject of news.

A simple example can be seen from here. A low-ranking village official died of suicide and the cause was known as a corruption defendant. A journalist certainly does not deserve to just believe that with the initial news. He must be able to stand in the midst of his family's grief, standing in the midst of the authorities, and so on. It's all done with a sympathetic attitude toward the suicide. What if a journalist without condolence immediately interviewed the incident without any sympathy for the family left behind?

That is why sympathy is needed by every practitioner of journalism. Sympathy is the most effective way of getting in touch with someone first. Even when meeting with the person affected by the disaster, sympathy is a very good attitude towards the person.

Definition of Empathy

Empathy is the deepening of the sympathy that is capable of affecting the physical and mental condition of a person. Example: sad tears when you see the brothers stricken disaster to lose lives.

Through empathy, someone in feeling the feelings and mental burden of others will be more felt, even can be said that we also get the feelings and mental burden. With such empathy, a journalist will find it much easier to get news from someone affected.

Empathy is emphasized in special circumstances, for example, when there is evictions of land, or when there has been a natural disaster. A journalist should not only preach it there, however, the journalist is also expected to assist the victims in an effort to reduce the burden physically and mentally.

This empathy and sympathy are human. In his work, journalist is a job that demands to do and think. As said before, journalists are also human. People who are able to think and have different views of life. This is what distinguishes one journalist from another. The quality of the heart used in practice will greatly affect his actions in doing his job.
For example, two journalists are sent on a social case. These two journalists both have great science in journalism. The difference is that one of these journalisms is only fixated on journalistic guidelines regardless of the circumstances surrounding the environment, so the information he gets is only from people who really want to work with him. Unlike other journalists. He tries to get closer to the victim, the family of the victim, and his close relatives, he also feels the same thing felt by the victim, therefore for the family of the victim and his relatives, the journalist is a good friend, and able to share his grief. This is the fundamental difference between two journalists with the point of view of conscience.

Sympathy and Empathy Application Practices in Journalism Indonesia

In accordance with the previous saying is, sympathy and empathy are things that are human and adaptive. Therefore, to use it optimally in the search for a news, a journalist must need experience in the world of journalists

In the article entitled 'When Empathy Journalism' by said the application of empathetic journalism is through reportage methods in exploring public facts through point of view and focus of attention. The point of view is a way of determining the subject to which the subject will show another subject as a starting point in the presentation as news. Or trying to find the source of events based on people who understand the incident. Or through a participatory method, by facing a news subject not only as a victim of an event, but more perceived as a social phenomenon that has a structural dimension, and seek justice in the case it faces.

With this paper, also mentioned journalistic practices that really recognize the need for empathy in its activities. Empathic journalism is known as one of journalistic practice that does not directly target the news, but also concerns about news subjects who have problems, and how a journalist is helping solve the subject matter news.

Sympathy and Empathy are sometimes forgotten in journalistic practice, especially Indonesia. The practice of sympathy and empathy in journalism is often ignored. This sometimes becomes a bad value for the Indonesian press.

The press is essentially a very important State identity. The press shows an ideology that will be known by society, domestic and foreign. What if the press we are proud of does not have sympathy and empathy in his work?

The media still contributes greatly to the actions of the community because of the news being disseminated. Therefore, media control in preaching a fact should not be exaggerated, because the impact will be felt in the community.
